Along with the Hogwarts Great Hall set from Harry Potter revealed at the New York Toy Fair, today LEGO announced another new set from the upcoming movie Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The set will be called 75951 Grindelwald’s Escape and features a Thestral-pulled carriage, two minifigures of Gellert Grindelwald and Seraphina Picquery, and several new pieces. “Cute” isn’t a word you’d normally associate with the dystopian cyberpunk future envisioned in Blade Runner. However, that’s what comes to mind with automaton120‘s futuristic microscale LEGO street scene. The backdrop nicely evokes the neon-soaked architecture of cyberpunk-LA, but the stars of the show here are the vehicles. That police spinner is a cracking little model, and the others really capture the feel of the cars and trucks in the movie. The presentation of the model could have been better, maybe clipping the ugly sheet backdrop out of the image, and some image processing could have added lens flare to the signage and vehicle lights etc. But not every builder likes to add post-production effects, so that’s nit-picking at an otherwise cool LEGO creation. Organic shapes are surely some of the hardest to capture in LEGO bricks — leaving many builders to concentrate their efforts on structures and vehicles rather than animal forms. However, Joe Perez seems to be up for the challenge — his latest model is a lifelike and intimidating bull on the charge. The shaping is excellent here, with slightly exaggerated proportions that effectively convey a genuine sense of heft and menace. Joe has been slowly putting together an impressive series of creatures in this style. Disney Pixar’s Incredibles 2, the long-awaited sequel to one of Pixar’s most beloved films, is slated to be released in theatres June 15, 2018. We’re getting a look at the upcoming LEGO sets ahead of time, so do proceed with caution as there may be some spoiler scenes ahead. These sets are expected to be released in May 2018.
