You’re Listening to WBCN: National Radio and Bacon Lovers Day in LEGO
Alright BrickNerd fans, today is National Radio Day in the US… and it’s also National Bacon Lovers Day! (Not sure who comes up with these things or why, but that’s what we’ve got to work with in a pinch.) Whether you’re tuning into the crackle of the airwaves or the sizzle of the skillet, lucky for us, there are plenty of LEGO MOCs to check out!
Vintage
Let’s kick it off with something from BrickNerd’s own Andreas Lenander. There was a time when radios were people’s connection to the outside world: news, entertainment, and of course, the emergency broadcast network- Shriiieeeeek!!! We all know that sound. Good times!
Cooking Up Some Tunes
Here we’ve got two variations from Johan Alexander (Jalex). First is a seventies-era radio that’s familiar to me from my childhood. We had one in the kitchen, too. But they could also run on batteries, so you could take it to the beach, or whatever. The only thing missing on this, like TVs of that time, was the little bow tie of aluminum foil on the antenna to help with reception.
I thought this little radio was as cute as a button, or knob, as it were. I was hoping the dish he’s ogling might contain bacon, but I don’t think it does. Whatever it might be, though, he certainly looks tuned in!
More Than Meets The Eye
Now with the obligatory Transformer. Joe Perez came up with this version of Soundwave back in 2016. I suppose you could argue that it’s a Walkman, which was mainly for listening to cassette tapes, but there usually was a radio feature on these. Not sure what kind of music Soundwave was into… Heavy Metal?
Retro Radio
Next up, we have a MOC of a retro radio by… how do you pronounce it? Lay-goh. Oh LEGO! Yes, you can take home this set today for only $99.99! (Wait, is that radio looking at me? It looks like it is looking at me with wide-eyed amusement…)
Extra Crispy
I guess we need to get some bacon in here too. For fans of the Big Bang Theory, you’ll recognize this shot right away. Sheldon brings Amy brickfest in bed. How romantic, right?! As long as she doesn’t break a tooth. They really are bacon lovers!
There you have it, folks! National Radio Day and National Bacon Lovers Day in LEGO. Maybe it’s not the typical BrickNerd deep dive or long-form interview, but I’m guessing we won’t get too much static for it. And sorry, I couldn’t come up with a decent bacon pun; I was up too late last night, and my brain is just fried. ‘Til next time!
