Welcome to Day 2 of our LEGO Advent Calendar countdown. Each day, we’ll reveal the four mini-builds from the LEGO Harry Potter, LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Friends, and LEGO City 2019 advent calendars along with commentary from The Brothers Brick team.
If you’re opening one (or more) of these advent calendars along with us, we’ve made sure the pictures and commentary on each day’s models will be behind a jump so we don’t accidentally ruin the surprise. The anticipation is killing us!
For Day 2, we have the Hogwarts Express from Harry Potter and Kylo Ren’s Shuttle from Star Wars.
Dave: This is what the LEGO advent calendars should aspire to be: two fantastic micro-models that are instantly recognizable. The Hogwarts Express train is spot on and could be a mini version of 75955. The red 1×1 curved top element has only ever been used in 41379 Heartlake City Restaurant (side note: one of my favorite sets to draft in the past year). The black 1×1 with curved top is also pretty rare, having only been used in 75810 Stranger Things Upside Down and the recent 21319 Friends Central Perk. I wish LEGO would include extras of these elements like they do with other smaller pieces like cheese slopes, but alas, that is not the case with these.
For Star Wars, Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle is another great model. It really does 75256 Kylo Ren’s Shuttle justice. The panel instructions have you build it backwards, so some kids who are unfamiliar with the movie might think that trans-red plate is an engine thruster rather than the front of the ship. I do love how both of these models use minifig roller skates, though.
Lino: “What are you so excited about?” “Touchdown!”
Daniel: Kylo Ren’s shuttle really is quite nice.
Benjamin: Both of these models are solid. Instantly recognizable, yet simple.
Ryan: The Little Sith Engine That Could
From the LEGO Friends and LEGO City 2019 advent calendars, we have a boombox ornament and a snow catapult.
Dave: The Friends calendar continues with a simple boombox ornament. I expect many of the Friends builds will have a hastily added element that you can tie a ribbon on or add a hook to hang it to a Christmas tree, but in this case, the embedded handle serves both purposes and looks natural. Plus a few teal tiles are always fun!
For City, we have a snow catapult. With only eight pieces, it feels a little thin, and we are still lacking a minifigure to play with it or yesterdays’s snow plow. That said, this catapult works really well. I got up to six feet before losing the 1×1 white round under the couch.
Lino: “In your eyes”… Can it, Dobler!
Benjamin: The boombox is a bit too Friends-y, and that catapult is little better than a Star Wars weapons rack. It does have playability, though, and my son would no doubt love to lose those 1×1 round bricks in 0.0002 seconds.
Andrew: If only we had noticed that boom boxes had embedded smart phones all along, we could all have had iPhones in 1983!
