J.K. Rowling’s newest series of movies for the the Wizarding World kicked off in 2016 with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. To much dismay of LEGO fans, there were no LEGO system sets that were produced for the movie which was interesting however there some LEGO Dimensions sets but they weren’t the same. Fast forward to this year and LEGO has revived the Harry Potter theme with the Wizarding World tie-in and there is finally a Fantastic Beasts set that is worth waiting for with Newt’s Case of Magical Creatures (75952). The set has 694 pieces and retails for $49.99. The contents of the box include four numbered bags, a bagged wing for the Thunderbird, a small sticker sheet, and two instruction booklets.
Minifigures
There are four minifigures in this set which are the main protagonists of Fantastic Beasts, Newt Scamander, Tina Goldstein, Jacob Kowalski, and Queenie Goldstein.
Newt wears a light brown vest with printing of a pocketwatch. He has a double-sided head with a nervous express on one side and a happy expression on the other. His accessories include a dark-orange colored wand and a green plant stem piece which is used to represent the Newt’s Bowtruckle named Pickett.
Tina wears a gray jacket over a lighter colored shirt and black pants. Her double-sided head shows her with happy and stern expression. Her accessories include a brown wand and a white teapot which was used to capture the Occamy.
Jacob wears a brown armor piece over his gray suit. His double-sided head shows him with a stern look on one side and a shocked expression on the other with a chinstrap for the helmet. He’s the only character that has a head accessory with the helmet in addition to the normal brown hair piece. His accessory is a black umbrella.
Finally we have Queenie who is in her pink outfit. She also has a double-sided head with some great facial expressions that is probably one of the best I’ve seen in a minifigure. Her accessory is just a black wand.
Although not a minifigure, we also get the cute Niffler figure that I’m sure many Fantastic Beasts fans will definitely want to pick up.
Build
Since this is a Fantastic Beasts set, It’s obvious that there are also some magical creature builds that are included. The first one is the beautiful Occamy which is a serpent-like creature that can grow or shrink to fit an available space. The body is made up of mostly the same segment builds and they have a scaly aesthetic. The magenta wings matches the color scheme of the Occamy perfectly and the head is specially printed for the creature.
The Thunderbird is a magical creature that looks like an eagle or a a hippogriff and it’s ability is causing storms when it flies. It has three pairs of wings and the larger ones are on the body while the other two are at the tails. Like with the Occamy, the head is specially printed for the Thunderbird.
The last magical creature for this set is the Erumpent. It resembles a rhino and it has a very bulky build in the front of the body. The head is nicely built and it uses trans-orange parts for the exploding fluid on the top.
The main part of the set is Newt’s suitcase and it is able to unfold to reveal three different areas but before that, let’s take a look at the exterior of the suitcase. Looking from afar, it seems like an ordinary suitcase. The front has a couple of stickers, one of which says N.S. which is for Newt Scamander and the other is on a 2×2 round tile for a lock that says “Muggle Worthy.” The back of it has some hinges that are discreetly hidden.
You open the suitcase up by lifting the top and unhinging the front. This shows the three areas off which includes a kitchen, Newt’s bedroom, and the Occamy nest. Each area has a surprising amount of detail with all the little accessories that are included.
The kitchen area has everything that is needed to prepare some food. On one wall, there’s a sink with a pearl-gold faucet. The adjacent wall has a cleaver, a brush and an area to store a turkey drumstick. Since it’s loose, I decided to use the extra clip on the wall.
The middle area of the suitcase interior is Newt’s bedroom area. There’s not much here but some of the details include a picture of Leta Lestrange, some potions, and a chest. There’s also a ladder that leads out.
The last area is the Occamy nest which is the most detailed room. The cobblestone floor is filled with different colored and size round tiles. There’s also some leafy sections with some branches. Next to the central-focused nest and Occamy egg is a feeding bucket.
Results
Although LEGO didn’t release a set based on Fantastic Beasts when the movie originally came out, Newt’s Case of Magical Creatures (75952) definitely worth the wait. The suitcase has lots of little details that correspond to the movie however I expected it to be a bit bigger and could store the creatures but it’s still a cue little thing that you can carry around.
The three magical creatures also very nice looking even though they’re small. There’s also the Niffler which could be a pretty popular figure and the Bowtruckle which I wished had a bit more detail besides being a plain stalk.
Finally the minifigure variants are exclusive to this set and are different from the ones found the in the Collectible Minifigures (71022).
I highly recommend picking this set up especially for what it’s going for. At almost 700 pieces and retailing for $49.99, this is a great deal and you get a really fun build with screen accurate minifigures.
Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
